Review of Highway (2007) by Isabel S — 02 Jun 2009
Pleasant surprise. When I first watched this movie I expected another 'Dumb and Dumber' knock-off with a good cast. I'm happy to say that this one exceeded the norm for straight-to-video films and my expectations.
For a movie that starts off so simple, it becomes very layered by the end and you're actually involved with the characters. It's a little all over the place. It's a slapstick comedy with lots of humor, it's a trippy movie with a lot of drug sessions, it's a deep movie with an actual 'good' message for teens! Cox kept the camera moving and knows how to film drug scenes.
Leto (nice haircut) and Gyllenhaal are awesome together as the best buds and Selma Blair can keep you entranced just by sitting there. Jeremy Piven has about two scenes but owns in them and John C. McGinley is hilarious as the hippie.
It starts off really weird and you almost expect it to stay that way. But if you stick with it, you'll get a wacky ride involving drugs, funny (and messed up) situations, deep themes (love, friendship) and an entertaining story.
Highly recommended.
