Review of Highlander II: The Quickening (1991) by Simeon M — 08 Jan 2010
Worth watching ONLY IF YOU SEE THE "Renegade" DIRECTOR'S CUT.
Highlander 2 suffers from the same illness of it's predecessor: some great fantasy/science fiction ideas but poor execution. The whole "the Immortals are alienish beings from the past who are exiled to Earth" thing was a good idea, but carried out with the budget of a Power Rangers movie. The whole Sci-Fi "we needed the shield to protect us from UV, but now the Ozone has repaired itself" thing was a great idea, but poorly connected and executed. Part of that is because it's so old, and part because it's a B-rate movie.
Positives: The sword fighting was good, better than the first. Some cool moments, couple good flashbacks. Sean Connery was absolutely amazing, though I felt like he was underused (again). Some pretty hilarious scenes with him in Scotland and trying to get with the times. The flashback of MacLeods wife dying from solar radiation was genuinely moving, but could have been better placed.
Like I said, some great ideas, just wish they had pulled them all together better.
