Review of Highlander (1986) by William G — 13 Dec 2009
Playing like an expanded rock video from the 80's [no suprise Mulcahy cut his teeth directing Bonnie Tyler big budget video hits], the plot is rather thin even if the premise is interesting enough to expand into countless sequels and a rough going TV series.
The film, while visually solid with it's dramtically staged fight scenes in the Scottish highlands or set pieces in New York, is edited rather roughly in places, the script introduces forced characters rather than anything organic which leaves much of the solid remnants of the cast with slim picking to work with, and much of the effects [while impressive for a relatively low budget movie of the time] belong firmly in the 80's.
But, while formulaic nearly 30 years later, the movie never really has a dull moment and does have some empowering, if slightly simple and cheesy, emotional moments Queen's bombastic score adds alot of punch to the picture, and Mulcahy visually has a wide scope.
For all it's flaws, it you don't demand to much, it's better moments wins the fight!
