Review of Highlander (1986) by Adrian Z — 11 Feb 2014
Highlander is a good epic at heart, but the execution is flawed. Telling the story of immortal man, Connor (Lambert), reluctantly drawn into a contest to the death among other immortals, with the fate of the world apparently at stake, Lambert lends the role a certain gravitas, to highlight the one major tragic side effect of being immortal - living on when loved ones grow old and die.
The problem is that marring this concept is often incoherent dialogue and uneven performances (including Lambert and Connery), although Clancy Brown, as the film's villain is generally fun to watch.
Director Mulcahy has a distinctive flair for interesting visuals and angles, but paces the film unevenly. Some missed potential, then, which cannot be said of Queen's terrific songs made for the film.
