Review of Higher Learning (1995) by Peter S — 11 Jun 2007
Not impressed. I was expecting a lot from this film after finding out it was done by John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood was an excellent film), but it failed miserably. This movie re-inforces every stereotype in America.
From the whiny, misguided, gun-toting, racist white male, to the men hating lesbians, to the over the top angry black men. This movie has nothing new to say about racism and does not provoke any original thought.
It merely depicts how these groups act according to their stereotype. Omar Epps was solid in his role, but Michael Rappaport gave quite possibly the worse performance I have ever seen, whining the whole movie about how blacks and Jews have ruined his life and America.
This movie had potential, but it was very poorly executed. Go see American History X, now THAT movie will blow your mind.
