Review of Higher Ground (2011) by Ben B — 25 Sep 2011
Kudos to Farminga for presenting religion in an objective way, something which is rarely done in American cinema. However her character had no clear want and focus, which left me asking, what is this point? Characters drift in and out of the film with no reason and or resolution and situations seemed forced, almost like an acting class exercises.
Also casting of her parents, including the great John Hawkes was very distracting, considering that Hawkes is Farminga's actual contemporary. This is not saying Hawkes didn't do a good job, but why not cast someone older?
