Review of High Sierra (1941) by Ron L — 30 Jul 2007
Easily my favorite Humphrey Bogart film. It also introduced me to Ida Lupino. I just think the earnest in Ida Lupinos acting is worth seeing. She plays a character that could come off as clingy, or the stupid pretty thing.
But she hits earnest just right. This is exemplified in a conversation she has with Bogart regarding "crashing out". The character doesn't actually know what it means, but had listened to it used by bogarts character.
She uses the phrase when trying to convince Bogarts character to let her come along. Rather then coming off as trying to appear in the know Lupino feels for the words meaning and applies it to her own life.
Another thing worth seeing in this film is its portrayal of a minor black character. Can anyone say Amos n Andy?
