Review of High School Musical 3: Senior Year (2008) by Joe C — 09 Nov 2009
I have no idea why this movie is fresh on the Tomatometer. I think everyone's being a bit too lenient and granting it amnesty since High School Musical is such a rubbish franchise to begin with. The songs are bad, the characters are practically non-existent, and what's worse is that for such an inanely simple plot, it was almost hard to follow! I spent the last half hour wondering if what was going on was a dream or reality.
That's pretty embarrassing for Kenny Ortega, if you ask me. Whatever happened to the good ol' days of Newsies!? I watched this movie because of Zac Efron, who I think is talented and charismatic, and who is the subject of a guilty pleasure semi-crush of mine, but I don't know if he's really earned it.
His movies are impossible to watch (except for Hairspray... and 17 Again is bad but I guess it's funny and at least entertaining enough)... ok, so I'll rephrase -- The High School Musical movies are impossible to watch.
He should do something better. I'm glad he passed on Footloose. I look forward to Me and Orson Welles, but if that one sucks, I may abandon him altogether. This movie might be an embarrassment for Kenny Ortega, but it's also an embarrassment for me.
