Do I think this is as bad as some people say? No, but I still think it's pretty bad. Granted, the actors aren't half bad, a few moments could give me a chuckle, and the first song (though WAY too long from my point of view). But there's one problem that's basically the main reason I don't like this:

We've seen this plot a million times. It doesn't try to take the whole 'two different people falling in love and overcoming all odds' and try to put a different spin on it. It's just a generic musical and that's it.
