Review of High School Musical (2006) by Andrew W — 01 Jun 2010
Erm, yes, I did watch it. Flixster friends, please don't delete me. High School Musical is what it is. It's possibly the most 'G' rated musical I have even seen (the UK Blu-Ray even declares on the back 'contains no sex, language or violence'), but it is not without charm.
Zac Efron displays little in the way of talent besides looking pretty but has since gone onto do better things and is pleasant enough, the remainder of the cast make little impression but are easily identifiable through their clichéd caricatures and colourful fashions.
Hey, it's a kid's film designed to be able to be seen by the widest audience possible and it's made by Disney - that doesn't automatically make it worthless. It's more than competently put together, has some good musical numbers and choreography, zips along at a good pace *and* there are actually some funny parts to it (as well as some cringey bits - the opening ten minutes are especially hard to sit through).
Cheesy, predictable and simplistic, and also not bad at all.
