Review of High School Musical (2006) by Will E — 11 Apr 2011
Of course, if this film were aimed at an older audience, it would be recieving a big, fat zero. Luckily for it, the target audience happens to be preteen girls, and it manages to capture that audience effectively.
The acting is satisfactory for this sort of film, especially from Ashley Tisdale and that guy who played her brother, who acted comically instead of dramatically. Vanessa Hudgins has some talent, but Zac Efron lacks a connection outside of being a pretty boy 'heartthrob'. That's not a reason to like someone. Although a good reason to like someone is their name, especially when it's named after a notoriously ugly breed of dog. Extra points for that...
The music is actually alright. Sure, they are daggy pop-filled grease ripoffs, but some were catchy, especially 'Bop to the Top' and the uber-daggy 'Stick to the Status Quo', which is probably the most fitting song for this sort of musical. The finale, which should be the best song, was actually pretty dull. OK, really dull. REALLY dull.
A film made for a select few to enjoy, and its aim is dead on. Unless your a screaming preteen girl, I'd steer clear.
My Rating: 40%.
Standardised: 30%.
