Review of High-Rise (2015) by Barney O — 20 Nov 2016
WHAT I LIKED: 'High Rise' is a film driven entirely by it's themes, and it certainly succeeds on that front. It's one of the most interesting social commantries I've seen in a long time actually, and I suppose that's mainly down to the source material, but also a great script and an interesting stylistic direction.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: That's all well and good, but when you go this far to explore your ideas there's precious little to bring it home for the audience. As a result, whilst you watch in vague desperation and wonder, you also do so with a real sense of detatchment. A fab score and Tom Hiddleston's excellent performance aren't enough to save that.
VERDICT: A thematic and stylistic idea that in the end feels a little wasted without any connection to the audience. Shame, there's so much great stuff here.
