Review of High-Rise (2015) by Amanda C — 21 Oct 2016
Visually, High-Rise is stunning. A violent mishmash of surrealist images ranging from seductive to disturbing dominate the screen and are hard to forget. The rest of the film is a bit murky. There is a story here, the fall of civilization, which could account for the complete and destructive anarchy that High-Rise depends into.
On the other hand, the anarchy is a little too controlled to properly work. Which is Hih-Rise's main failing. When the plot goes out the window, all that's left is a collection of discordant images, that while may be powerful on their own, get horribly confused when they are forced to relate to each other in a manner that hints at a narrative.
