Review of High-Rise (2015) by John W — 27 Mar 2016
This film was a mess.
There's some great acting in it, but sadly the film version of the book is chaotic and disjointed. The film manages to be both tediously slow, and at the same time rushed in its character development. You end up not really caring about any of the characters.
What storyline there is dissolves into mayhem by the hour mark as small developments are given major roles and large developments go ignored. There are so many "Why?" questions that the film nears incoherence. Why can't they leave the building? Why do they all go feral when the power fails? Why don't they just fix the power? Why does no one react when people are killed? Why? Why? Why?
You leave the film feeling confused, aggravated, and disappointed that such a great cast could be so wasted. I went to an early screening and watched three people walk out before the halfway mark. It was sad - but I myself struggled to complete the full two hour schizophrenic experience.
