Review of High-Rise (2015) by Isadore H — 12 Aug 2017
Like most of its characters it features, High Rise is good looking, but lacks in key areas and likely thinks too highly of itself and tries to be complex by showing us what I guess is supposed to be deep metaphorical imagery and dialogue.
This is two hours long but it feels like two and a half. These things being said, it's not devoid of any positives, namely the acting and the direction. I really didn't find one performance out of place, although there was some appropriately over the top acting, but through all that Tom Hiddelston kept his own performance contained and it really worked for me.
I thought the film was also one of the best looking I've seen all year, and the strange, bombastic score worked for the most part with me. My main issue is this, High Rise is a film that calls for some entertaining action and possibly some funny situations.
However, it seemed to me like it was trying to be taken seriously as some kind of social commentary, but it completely lost me in its maze of trying to be a deep film while also showing me explicit scenes of sex and violence, and no clear line of who was good or bad in the film.
Not a horrible film, but one I don't ever see myself revisiting again.
