Review of High Plains Drifter (1973) by Ryan Gibbons — 17 Jun 2010
High Plains Drifter starts out promising with the Leone style intro with no dialogue and only sounds, however his movies set the tone this one does not. Eastwood who I admire very much really does not do much more than walk around being an asshole.
Unlike the man with no name I do not find the stranger one bit interesting and the writer seemed to try to make him more interesting than he actually is. Eastwood's directing is okay but the movie is called High Plains Drifter and it takes place in one town.
Unlike most of his movies Eastwood's character is very unlikeable and im not even sure if thats what they were going for, his performance is actually sort of bland. The score is not bad but I would have liked to hear more of it to cover up some of these scenes.
If this movie was an attempt to recapture Leone's work then it was an epic fail, this movie is really nothing more than a mindless and uninteresting hour and forty five minute long mess. Sorry Mr.
Eastwood, please don't kick my ass.
