Review of High Plains Drifter (1973) by Senor C — 20 Jul 2010
Clint Eastwood directs his first Western & sorta goes to the well w/ a formula that successfully served him in the spaghettis w/ the return of the man w/ no name. This isn't actually in the same class of Leone's (the Morricone score is sadly missed) but Eastwood does just fine w/ a completely different style.
A nameless stranger comes to the aid of a small town who are about to befall the vengeance of some outlaws (led by Geoffrey Lewis) that have just been released from prison. Although not originally intended because he got the towns people armed & ready for combatants he ends up taking on the gang himself because they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn w/ an elephant gun.
The final conflict has great atmosphere as the town is painted red & ablaze. Lago really does become a personal hell.
