Review of High Plains Drifter (1973) by Ross R — 17 Mar 2008
Through flashbacks, we learn that Clint Eastwood plays a small town sherriff who is killed by some outlaws in the middle of his main street as everyone watches, but no one steps in to save him.
So now Eastwood returns to the city to get some well-deserved vengeance on the lousy towns people who stood motionless and watched him die.
But how is a dead man returning? Is he a ghost? A twin brother of the murdered man? The movie never really says. The people of the city also don't seem to recognize him, or at least pretend not to.
It doesn't really matter what state of reality the events take place in, because the steady build up to Eastwood's revenge is so extraordinary. Ashton Kutcher couldn't Punk someone this well.
