Review of High Plains Drifter (1973) by Jon B — 10 Dec 2008
"nature's undo sprawl is revealed through all 5'3 of Arafat's suburban hospital death, and nature's undo sprawl is revealed by Gene Simmons on Fresh Air".
-Make Believe "Wild Science, Wild Signs".
The pure blunt force biblical violence that may have seemed more revelatory when the Western was still a viable framework for the cathartic pro wrestling release that is now more easily manifested cinematically in both urban-set action and video games. This is the biblical violence Eastwood would later find the shadings of and apologize for later in his career. The apologies would help him find his poetry.
However, the blunt force of High Plains Drifter has its value, for fans of this I recommend Garth Ennis' Punisher MAX series (even though I'm generally not a fan of comics) as he's working along a similar line while finding having the space to work out the manifold consequences and secondary effects of old testament justice in 21st century terms.
