Review of High Plains Drifter (1973) by Tom C — 02 Mar 2009
A strong film in which Eastwood pays homage to his work with Sergio Leone while infusing his film with its own distinctive feel. Eastwood is, well, Eastwood, and I don't think it could ever NOT work.
The rest of the cast works fine and the score is awesome, blending an ambient eeriness with the traditional western sound. The ending "twist", while not hard to see coming, is appropriate and the whole film, despite featuring some comic relief, feels a whole lot darker and more grim than Eastwood's prior Western work.
Recommended.
