Review of High Plains Drifter (1973) by Ian F — 03 Apr 2009
Anyone who doesn't understand that this is actually a "ghost" story is a prick.
The people of a small town discover a goldmine & by law are supposed to inform the govenment.
Instead they have the sherif murdered before he can report the discovery & they think they have gotten away with it.
Clint rides into town & manipulates everyone individually into destroying themselves & their "'ill gotten gains" piece by piece.
Once the sherif has a grave stone erected to honor his memory Clint rides off into the desert having avenged the wrong doing of the town.
If you LOOK carefully there are many times when he should have died in the film & he doesn't - he arrives in & leaves in a kind of shimmer which you may believe to be just the heat - Clint himself has stated that it is actually an avenging angel story.
