Review of High Plains Drifter (1973) by Katie L — 25 Jul 2009
I don't know if Eastwood intended it, but his character "The Stranger" and this whole movie is basically a repeat of "The Man with no name" trilogy. The only difference? Eastwood takes The Man with no name and makes him MORE anti-hero, a character you root for AND hate, and the movie WAY more violent. By the time you're 10 minutes into the film, The Stranger has killed 3 men who were protecting the town (but basically robbing everyone), and raped a woman (you're supposed to think it's rape, but it's not really, once you find out more about the female character. But the scene walks WAAAY too close to the line for my comfort. But...it's the 70s.) All the characters' moral values were WAY too ambiguous. But maybe that's a true portrayal of the Old West. I heard John Wayne HATED Eastwood's westerns, and chewed his butt out for it in a nasty letter. Well...a lot of criticisms can be said for John Wayne's movies too.
Anywho, it's entertaining, and I liked the movie...but I didn't love it.
