Review of High Plains Drifter (1973) by Kelly H — 30 Jan 2011
Wow. This has to be the manliest movie I have ever seen. There is a particular scene where Clint Eastwood's "Stranger" walks off with a bottle of whiskey in one hand and a screaming woman in the other. This film can easily be seen as misogynistic, but I wasn't bothered by it. It is the Wild West after all.
This is not your average Western, as there is this strange, surreal quality about the whole film. And Eastwood's performance is just perfect for this-- he gives off this ghost-like presence even before you have any idea who he is. He truly did absorb the directorial talents of Don Siegel and Sergio Leone. The score is also very creepy and haunting.
This is essential viewing for Eastwood and Western fans alike.
Loved it! --100%.
