Review of High and Low (1963) by Christopher P — 14 Jun 2008
A gripping thriller/police drama about a wealthy executive who must choose between losing his company, or losing the life of a kidnapped child through extortion.
High and Low is without doubt one of Kurosawa's finest efforts, and it has great performances all around, especially from Mifune and Nakadai.
It is an intelligent but gloomy look at corporate corruption, kidnappings, and police investigations, as well as a commentary on Japan's "caste" system.
