Review of High and Low (1963) by Stephen L — 08 Apr 2011
OMG SO EFFING GOOD!!! It gets going really quickly and doesn't let up. It's almost like a two part film because there is a definite change of pace midway through. At first it's a moral drama about one man's incredibly difficult choice between his own well-being and that of another.
This half is emotional, tense and personal while still maintaining a suspenseful vibe. When the choice is made, it feels like the movie is almost over, but it's only halfway through which is a relief because at this point, you're well beyond invested in the story and characters.
The second half is a cop mystery thriller and it's one of the most engaging and well orchestrated crime thrillers I've seen in awhile. The conclusion is satisfying and thankfully not Hollywood bullshit.
The whole movie is very well shot and acted. The script is brilliant and the pacing is perfect, which makes it a great recommendation for people who are skeptical about foreign black and white movies.
