Review of High and Low (1933) by Mark D — 22 Sep 2007
Without a doubt the most intense club sequence ever filmed. kurosawa's use of the upper and lower echelons of the city to represent social class, along with the intense kidnapping plot provide a prototype for modern films like "ransom" to desecrate.
kurosawa's films are usually deliberate and plodding in their pace, but this feels like an hour-long adrenaline rush when you leave the theater. plus, the non-stop innovation of camera work and composition is not to be missed by serious students of cinema.
