Review of High and Low (1933) by Curtis R — 09 Sep 2010
Akira Kurosawa can do no wrong when it comes to making films. That especially goes for this modern neo noir thriller starring Toshiro Mifune as high ranking shoe executive, Kingo Gondo who makes a play for controlling shares of the company because he shares the founder's vision of quality over quantity.
His rivals want to make higher quantities of shoddy made shoes. While this struggle is taking place a man kidnaps the son of Gondo's chauffeur who the kidnapper mistakes for Gondo's son. Upon learning the mistake he made the kidnapper still demands the same ransom for his chauffeur's son knowing Gondo won't let the child die.
The first half of the film deals with Gondo's moral dilemma and the second half deals with the dragnet put up by Inspector Tokura(Nakadai) and his police squad to bring the kidnapper to justice.
