Conventional Oscar-baity storytelling? Yes.
Borderline generic soundtrack? Yes.
Jim Parsons in a movie above and beyond him? Yes. Then why the hell am I giving this movie 4 stars, you may ask... Well, for starters it is Oscar-baity but in aConventional Oscar-baity storytelling? Yes.

Yes, Jim Parsons is in this, but he's the perfect typecast for intellectual **** This and all other casting choices were perfect. I didn't care too much for Mahershala Ali's storyline but it wasn't bad.
Overall, an extremely compelling story driven by extraordinary performances makes this movie great.
I was extremely skeptical about this movie, and it knocked me off my feet.
PS: Kevin Costner lives to play 60s characters. The director rejected Spiderman to direct this, watch out for this guy. The cinematography was amateur, several shots were slightly unfocused for no apparent reason, if not for this, I would've given it 4.5 stars.
