Review of Hidden Figures (2016) by Gregory M — 21 Feb 2017
'Hidden Figures' promises and delivers one thing: highlight the often veiled yet indispensable contributions of women to cutting-edge technology.
Not only is this a celebration of the demonstrable fortitude of women in science and from all walks of life, but an indictment of the baseless belief that "women are the weaker sex.".
From Ada Lovelace to Grace Hopper to Marie Curie to Shirley Chisholm, women-not just men-have always been at the forefront of both scientific and sociocultural breakthroughs.
And though we have made significant progress as a society (even came real close to electing the first female POTUS), I am afraid when it comes to pushing back against parochial notions of women that still persist today, we have barely scratched the surface.
For those who might be swift in reducing 'Hidden Figures' to "just another movie," know this: if there's a minute possibility that the young women of this generation could draw strength and inspiration to trust their intuition and follow their curiosity, in a world rife with scaremongering and demoralizing voices, then I'd say this film has indeed done some good in the world.
