Review of Hidden Figures (2016) by Matt A — 25 Feb 2017
It's always nice when an unappreciated person or group get their due credit, especially if they were an integral part of something as monumental as what is depicted in Hidden Figures. Unfortunately, having done some research after watching it, much of the story, and much that was done to earn our sympathies, turned out to have been exaggerated.
The tale itself is interesting enough not to warrant any embellishments, but Hollywood seemingly can't resist pumping up what is already a fascinating series of events. It doesn't matter too much however, because the resulting product is great.
Terrific performances, smart writing, an upbeat score and tone and a universal message of tolerance and acceptance. It's shocking to believe that there was a time when people were truly so stupid and blatantly ignorant, and that this mindset could have deprived the world of one of its most significant moments, one which, as the film depicts, would have been near-impossible without our protagonists.
It might not be entirely true, and twists the truth to hammer it's point in, but it's clever, fun, informative and celebrates those who work behind the scenes, doing all the graft but getting none of the spoils.
