Review of Hi, Mom! (1970) by Paula C — 16 Nov 2008
I bought this shit for 3 dollars at Wooster Big Lots. Big Lots, either someone is playing a prank on you or you've never screened this before deciding to sell it. It's not repellant by being necessarily trashy, but the R-rated elements- like the nudity and the racial confrontation of the Be Black Baby segment- are staged in a way that's defiantly, gloriously defiantly, unexplained and those who aren't in on the joke are left at any given 15 minute stopping point.
The only consistent aspect of the movie is Robert DeNiro's hilarity, which I always thought was underrated, not in shit like Meet the Parents but in Jackie Brown, he's so good at playing lovable, clueless scumbags.
Here more lovable than Jackie Brown. Dare I say I have a crush on young Robert DeNiro, especially here, in Deer Hunter, and Godfather 2.(but not quite travis bickle...why is he idolized in pop culture? I've never understood that.
it's like people are completely blind to how sad and tormented that "you talkin to me?" scene is in Taxi Driver. It's probably just the mohawk that slobs on peoples' knobs) Anyway, if you think you've had enough with the lack of a plot, stick around! The very end I found to be a big payoff in hilarity and the glory of such an unforgivingly experimental structure.
bravo! I'm going to see the "prequel" also, "Greetings".
