Review of Hesher (2010) by Ed Fucking H — 06 Aug 2011
A very good debut feature from Spencer Susser and I'm looking forward to seeing what this young director does next. This sort of reminds me of a less offensive American version of Visitor Q. Story is TJ's mother has recently died, leaving TJ's father, played by Rainn Wilson, an emotional wreck.
This is when Hesher comes into this broken families life and helps TJ and his father get over their loss. The way he goes about doing this includes blowing shit up and healthy dose of violence. This is a real dark comedy that will perhaps be too dark for general audiences, but this film is guranteed a cult following in the years to come.
Joseph Gordon Levitt was great as Hesher and Natalie Portman is always good for eye candy, but the real stand out performance was Devin Brochu as TJ, who delivers a subtle and emotional performance matched by few.
Definently a young actor that will most likely be going places. All in all a very enjoyable movie. Recommended.
