Review of Hesher (2010) by Sally K — 16 Sep 2011
Hesher is basically a harsh, slap in the face way of saying don't take what you have for granted.
He takes TJ under his wing and shows him that despite the terrible things that can happen in life you have to crack down and take a look at what you still have to be thankful for (example, the missing nut story). A bunch of random things happen to deliver that message to TJ and his dad. By the end of the film they got the bigger picture that people were trying to tell them all along.
With that said, I found the film as a whole emotional and hilarious at the same time. It was the perfect blend.
Despite the way the previews portray the other characters they are all very minor in comparison to Hesher and TJ. I think Piper Laurie has about the third highest amount of relevant screentime. Rainn Wilson and Natalie Portman are important characters but I feel like neither of them had the focus the other three had. Funny because Portman is the most advertised actor in the film yet she isn't in it a whole lot. Maybe 15 minutes total, if that. In a way I would say if you are a huge Natalie Portman fan and want to see this just because of her I wouldn't bother. But at the same time I want you to bother because the film itself is very good. Surprising but good.
Just remember... TJ is sad.
