Review of Hesher (2010) by Steve S — 25 Oct 2011
Maybe it was a little better than the 3 stars I'm crediting it for. The character acting was pretty good, the writing was well done, and it was a piece that ostensibly had a lot of heart.
However, 3 stars is what it gets. The character acting wasn't knock-you-out-of-this- world good. And the Gordon-Levitt's character isn't really grounded in any sort of reality. He primarily exists more as a metaphor for carnage and destruction.
Though, late in the movie we find out he really is as lost and angry as everyone else. But my thought is. . . well yeah . . . And why the film-makers didn't feel that was something interesting they could have been playing with all along escapes me.
Bottom line: worth seeing, had some memorable parts and characters. But ultimately it is a little muddled between dramatic narrative and thematic exploration.
