Review of Hero (2012) by Nguyen Thuy H — 24 Sep 2012
Ostentatiously, Hero seems to say that individuals must sacrifice for the greater peace. But look at the incredibly boring way in which every king's guard throws his arrows and screams for execution, I think that Zhang Yi-mou is saying something else.
Which is a good thing, because at the end of the day, he did not betray the spirit of Raise the Red Lantern (or did he? I mean, he had made the corny Road Home just 3 years before). The film would have been better though if it had not indulged itself in soooo much melodramatic sentiments.
