Review of Hero (2012) by Frances H — 10 Sep 2013
A film of great power and visual beauty that is simply stunning, but could also be the subject of endless debate about the nature of violence and war. The point about becoming a warrior so that you can lay down the sword is a fallacy in my opinion.
I go along with idea that fighting for peace is like f***ing for virginity--it is illogical. But while greed in any form is the dominant characteristic of mankind, there will not be peace, unfortunately.
And the conquest of the rest of China by the first Emperor did not keep the peace forever. Eventually, Western technology allowed the European powers to get over the wall and through the oceans and deserts that protected China and that China had allowed herself to be convinced would protect her forever.
By not keeping up with the rest of the world, to which they considered themselves superior, China was then too weak to defend herself from the western powers.
