Review of Hereditary (2018) by Rosalyn L — 21 Jun 2018
This movie is amazing! It reminds me so much of Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist and the original Wicker man! You can totally see the influences of 70s horror in this film. I am so happy to have a movie that doesn't rely on jump scares or purely graphic gore, instead slowly building dread and discomfort, laying open all the wounds of a tragedy and fractured relationships. Then, twist it into a surrealist horror by the end. I don't think I have watched a movie that made me so uncomfortable and anxious in a long time and I loved it.
If you are looking for a quick scare popcorn horror movie, with gross monsters/ghosts and quick scares, this film is not for you. It is a grueling movie to watch, dragging you through some of the most challenging aspects of grief, paranoia, anger caused by losing a loved one before spiraling into a horror movie.
