Review of Hereditary (2018) by Shockingambrose — 11 Jun 2018
I was expecting much more from this movie given the gushing reviews. I thought there would be a fresh take on the genre, something to think about - like what Get Out accomplished last year. But it turned out to be just a variation on Rosemary's Baby.
And I didn't find it scary at all. Maybe that's because the idea of a devil holds no currency for me. You have to buy into Christianity's notion of the existence of a devil for this film to have an y power.
Having said that, the director made some good choices in his attempt to foster a dark atmosphere. The art direction was terrific and poor Toni Collette did a great job looking agonizingly scared most of the time.
Bottom line: I'd say skip it unless you really believe in Lucifer.
