Review of Hereditary (2018) by Teddywyman — 07 Jun 2018
The first 10/10 of this year. Hereditary has an emotionally deep story with a lot of real, human drama in it, and it frankly does take a while to get going. However, once the true horror begins to set in, it rewards you for paying close attention to all of the small details early on in the film, and the story as a whole becomes clear.
It does feature some conventional scares, but they're always necessary to the plot, and never feel cheap. You care deeply about the characters, and there are enough surprises that you should be engrossed for the entire running time.
Without spoiling anything, just try to pay attention closely while you watch it. It does have a coherent story, but it's sometimes cryptic and complex, and it certainly has deeper messages that warrant a second viewing.
A truly frightening film.
