Review of Hereditary (2018) by Damian R — 08 Jun 2018
Let's get one thing straight right off the bat: this is NOT, "This generation's Exorcist". In fact, it comes nowhere close to that in terms of actual horror as portrayed by several critics, so don't take their foolish words on that note.
This misguided marketing is what ultimately led to a good majority of people expecting the most disruptive and disturbing film they have ever seen, which it was not. However, do not let exaggerated claims from critics stop you from seeing this movie.
It IS disturbing and it IS an unsettling film well worth the watch with incredible acting. However, the terror really comes from the realism that it portrays (aside from the supernatural aspects) and if one goes into the movie expecting Exorcist-level horror, this will not be the case.
Great movie overall, and Ari Aster is certainly deserving of high praise for this haunting narrative.
