Hereditary, a movie that takes a depressing and terrifyingly uncomfortable dump on your soul. I expected it be good based on the reviews but it was even better than expected. It reminded of Rosemary's Baby and The Babadook.

The portrayal of mental illness in the movie was very powerful and more terrifying and relateable compared to The Babadook. It's a very slow burn of a movie but I would never say that it's boring.

The acting is superb from all involved, especially from Toni Collette playing a distressed and depressed mother who is simultaneously trying to process grief while attempting to maintain a grip on reality.

Couple with the acting, the cinematography and soundtrack creates a very unsettling experience throughout the entire film. The film sets out to make you extremely uncomfortable rather than fill the run time with jump scares which makes the film all the more terrifying.

While I think the ending was a bit much, the movie was carefully crafted to include plenty of signs leading up to it. The trailers don't give too much away in my opinion so I wouldn't read or watch more if you haven't yet seen it.

It's movie best enjoyed if you know little to nothing about the overall plot.
