Review of Hereditary (2018) by Christopher B — 24 Oct 2018
With all the hype, its clear that this is an effective, technically brilliant horror film but one of the slow-building variety. Its harrowing tale about grief with an unsettling supernatural twist. While its doesn't scare in the traditional sense for the majority of the film, it manages to unsettle, chill and shock in a number of ways.
Actors Toni Colette & Alex Wolff are particular phenomenal. Colette manages to portray Annie descent into madness with enough grounded depth and Wolff powerfully sells Peter as a boy stricken with devastating guilt.
It takes a while for the supernatural to kick in and it does so near the end with some searing imagery. The ending is a bit sillier and underwhelming that I hoped for and parts of the story could have been told abit better but for slow-burn chill, I'd recommend this film.
