Review of Hereditary (2018) by Roman C — 10 Sep 2018
Slow, ponderous, and finally ramps up at the end to infodump you with the plot it had been hinting at the beginning. There's some genius here -- Toni Colette's acting is superb as usual -- but it's not as smart as professional critics make it out to be. A friend was calling out this film's plot twists five minutes into it. This isn't groundbreaking; This is a collection of standard horror tropes spread too thinly over Too much whitebread of family tragedy drama, with a healthy dollop of idiot ball plot advancement to keep the ball rolling.
Watch for toni collette's emotional breakdown, skip ahead to the freaky horror stuff at the last act, and then maybe watch a more effective family horror like the first insidious.
