Review of Hereditary (2018) by Erolsabadosh — 27 Aug 2018
Wow, this film wasn't really what I expected. The poster for some reason invoked a really dark and gritty slow burning vibe, and while it's certainly got some very dark moments I was surprised by how quickly it kicked into high gear and didn't let up in terms of shock, tension and horror.
It's delightfully wicked; a rollercoaster of demented psychological thrills. Despite some garishly violent images in places the majority of the horror stems from the threat of violence rather than the enactment of it.
I found it delightfully wicked in that respect; it was almost toying with the audience with threats of continued sadism and when you don't get the release (a typical build up leading to a death followed by a breather period) a deeper unease sets in and for me that's extremely hard to sustain but they achieved that spectacularly.
