Review of Hereditary (2018) by Joey K — 07 Sep 2018
I was astonished to find that Hereditary's first time director, Ari Aster, is a master at crafting great, unsettling horror films. Hereditary is the perfect blend of mainstream horror and art house, building tension for an hour and a half before revealing its true premise.
Although horror really isn't my genre, I found myself totally wrapped up in the suspense. This is one of those movies where you need to pay attention to detail and look for things in the corner of each frame because there is some crazy stuff there.
With all the recent changes in the academy I think we may see Oscar nominations for this film, specifically for Toni Collette's acting and the cinematography. It really feels like each frame is the audience peering into one of the miniature houses meticulously designed by Toni Collette's character.
While the premise may be overused in horror films, the expert and unique way in which it was put together distinguishes it from the rest. This is a must see if you like the genre, but I'd recommend that you don't see it alone.
