Review of Hereditary (2018) by Veronica F — 24 Aug 2018
Simply phenomenal film. It's so unfortunate that most people who see it will be disappointed due to a lack of jump scares or "spooky monsters" because this is simply one of the best films (horror or otherwise) to come out this year.
The true horror comes from the bleak, downright depressing tone of the film driven by the performance of the incomparable Toni Collette, the flawless cinematography and the eerie soundtrack. As the family unit crumbles so does any semblance of sanity they once possessed.
From then on out, anything goes. Some of the disturbing images caught in the corner of the frame in certain shots throughout the film have stuck with me even to this day. If you do see this film, go in with an open mind realizing that a good horror film doesn't necessarily have to include gore, violence and creatures that go bump in the night in order to be effective.
Even if you don't find Hereditary particularly frightening, you would have to admit it is a masterful accomplishment in filmmaking by director Ari Aster in his big screen debut.
