Review of Hereditary (2018) by Bradley J — 26 Jul 2018
Classy modern horror is always difficult to find, but with Hereditary, the genre gains a boost in a new director and brilliantly acted suspense fest. It is a nearly perfect, masterful film. That is until the final fifteen minutes.
Until then, the film is a highly gripping and occasionally shocking experience, featuring certain scenes that will have your mouth agape wondering if you really just saw that. It is bolstered by a predictably brilliant performance by Toni Collette, once again proving she is the most underrated actress in Hollywood and despite the film's mistreatment of her character towards the end, her performance is the heart and soul of the film.
It's unfortunate then that the film goes off the rails completely near the end, unspooling the intrigue and sustained tension of the first three quarters. Borrowing elements from The Witch, the film becomes less about the character we have invested most of our time in as the audience and switches perspectives.
This means the emotional investment in Annie is undermined and is slightly frustrating in its viewing of mythological hosts. Nevertheless, the film still amounts to a highly nerve shredding experience, one that is slow burning and mesmerizing, like a descent into hell.
Rating: 79.
