Review of Hereditary (2018) by Unnumbered — 03 Jul 2018
With Hereditary, you get what you give. If you've read how "existentially terrifying" it is and walk in with the intent of sealing off your heart and mind so you can brag about how it's not scary after all, then you're simply not going to like it. Most horror movies operate within a very tight definition of "scare," usually accompanied by a jolt. Hereditary goes much further into the territory of nightmare imagery -- much of which is typically associated with the terrors imagined during sleep paralysis -- and can therefore come off as a bit comical to a skeptical eye.
But if you invest in this movie, if you give it your full attention and let yourself get sucked in, it will ruin you. Cast out the hype and watch it on its own terms, damn it.
