Review of Hereditary (2018) by Grace L — 28 Jun 2018
I so wanted to like this movie; I love Toni Collette. The good parts: acting was terrific, mood-setting (lighting, music) ditto. The bad parts: everything else. What could have been an engrossing mystery slowly and deliciously solved (with of course the big OMG reveal) was instead a series of macabre events strung together by hysteria after a few allusions at the beginning to something nefarious about the deceased grandmother.
There could have been so much more substance to the story, but alas, there was not; more focus was given to visuals than to plot, and I found myself getting annoyed and then bored and then really annoyed, and I finally just wished I were as wasted as Gabriel Byrne's talent is in this film.
