Review of Hereditary (2018) by Federico L — 29 Jun 2018
The 5 stars go to director Ari Aster for creating a film that's full of artistry and wit. It is a very bleak and sorrowful reverie that unwinds from within a cursed family, unaware of the dreadful heritage it possesses.
The camera work is very compelling and intelligently constructed, producing the sense of observing the scenes unfold like miniature sets and characters being maneuvered like marionettes in the hands of a sinister satanic cult.
It is a cleverly put together family drama that transforms into a new type of horror movie, possibly one that's difficult to comprehend for the average, uneducated, superficial viewer. I feel that Aster is a very bright genius of film making and his debut can be appreciated by movie goers who conceive film outside of categories and rather consider it to still be an art.
People don't get this type of cinema and, you know what, too bad for them. I don't believe that this film is a masterpiece but I am rewarding it as a great first chapter in Ari Aster's filmography.
